More from Kuwait

Kuwait 1 - Kuwait 2 - Iraq - Afghanistan 1 - Afghanistan 2

Some more photos from my scenic deployment.  Enjoy.

Things that go (or went) "boom"

When you're not actually in Kuwait, it can be easy to forget that Kuwait was invaded just fifteen years ago.  It's not so easy when you're here; the landscape has a lot of reminders.  An abandoned tank here, a ruined plane there, you get the idea.  Here are some of the Iraqi leftovers I've seen.  The first collection of buildings is a gutted compound just off the "Highway of Death," the main north-south corridor that runs from the Iraqi border to the heart of Kuwait.

Never thought I'd look
through a T-55 gunner's sight.
Or stand in the commander's
hatch, for that matter.

This compound is somewhere
west of Kuwait City.

The "Muwafi" and the "Mutlaa"

I originally heard that these were two Iraqi tugs that were leftovers from the 1990 invasion.  I need better sources, because these are Kuwaiti boats! These sit (and sometimes sink) in the harbor most of the time, but occasionally they are towed out to sea to serve as targets for "Sea Skua" ship-to-ship missiles.  The Kuwaitis can't get perfect practice, though, since they don't want to sink their targets!
